Wissa stops Portugal: Congo make history at the World Cup
Cristiano Ronaldo began his sixth World Cup campaign on a disappointing note as the Democratic Republic of Congo secured their first-ever point at a World Cup finals, holding Portugal to a 1-1 draw in Group K.
Joao Neves opened the scoring in the sixth minute, heading home from a Pedro Neto cross. Portugal, however, failed to protect their lead, and deep into first-half stoppage time Yoane Wissa rose unmarked in the box to head past goalkeeper Diogo Costa.
Wissa's goal, scored for Newcastle United's striker, sparked extraordinary celebrations among the Congolese players, staff and supporters inside the stadium. It was Congo's first-ever goal at a World Cup.
Congo absent for 52 years
Congo were appearing at the World Cup for the first time since 1974, when the country was known as Zaire. The achievement was all the more remarkable given that the team's preparations had been disrupted by an Ebola outbreak in their country.
Ronaldo, a peripheral figure
Ronaldo, 41, spent the match on the fringes and failed to make his mark, in stark contrast to his great rival Lionel Messi, who had scored a hat-trick against Algeria the previous day.
Former Portuguese defender Pepe watched the match from the VIP stands and appeared far from pleased with what he saw.
Tribute to Diogo Jota
Several Portuguese players wore wristbands on their wrists, presented by Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, as a tribute to their late international teammate Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident last year.
Bernardo Silva, who earlier in the day confirmed his free transfer to Real Madrid, watched the second half from the bench after coach Martinez substituted him at half-time.
