Trump: Today we ended the war with Iran

US President Donald Trump declared that the United States "ended the war" with Iran today, after earlier claiming both sides had agreed to a "memorandum of understanding" to halt hostilities, according to CNN.

Trump said Iran had agreed to never pursue nuclear weapons.

"I don't know if you heard, but we ended the war with Iran today," Trump said during a virtual rally in support of Georgia's Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones, who is running for governor.

"They have agreed to never have nuclear weapons, which is something we insisted upon; that was the whole purpose. That was 95 per cent of it," Trump declared.

Trump's remarks came after he called off further strikes against Iran earlier in the day, suggesting on his Truth Social platform that a deal had been reached, without providing details of its terms.

Iran has not confirmed that any agreement has been reached, while Trump wrote on the social network that the American blockade on vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports would remain in place until "this transaction is finalised".
